The OET listening subtest consists of three sections. It has a total of 42 questions and takes approximately 40 minutes. The topics are generic medical topics. (You are not assessed on your medical knowledge, just your English language knowledge.)
Part A
The first section consists of two extracts each about five minutes long. You must listen to a conversation between a healthcare worker and a patient and fill gaps in the notes that were taken during the interview. You will hear the answers while listening. You only listen once.
Part B
Part B of the listening sub test consists of six short extracts about 60-90 seconds long. Each extract has one three option multiple choice question. The extracts are a recording of a typical conversation between colleagues and patients and members of other health care disciplines.
Part C
Part C consists of two extracts. Each extract has six three option multiple choice questions. The recording is of an interview of a health professional or a presentation given by a health professional about the patients they treat.
Marking
Part A is marked by two qualified OET assessors who use a marking guide.
Part B and C are scanned and marked by a computer.
The listening test is designed to test your ability to listen for gist, specific detail, reason for speaking and opinions of the speaker.
